People outside of Michigan might think that all of our preferred recreation activities center on the Great Lakes. Although we love Lake Huron as much as anyone, there’s also so much more to our geographic location—and plenty of spots for pet-friendly adventures. Between beach explorations, charming towns, scenic trails, and nearby forests, there’s something for everyone in Alpena.

Appreciating Alpena’s Parks

Pets are welcome to explore Rockport Recreation Area on a 6-foot leash and are allowed to camp out with their families. You simply can’t go wrong with a pet-friendly adventure to Thompson’s Harbor and any Rockport State areas.

  • The Rockport Quarry and Sinkhole Loop is one of the best pet-friendly hiking trails.
  • Be sure to check out the grounds around the lighthouses on Presque Isle.
  • For quicker jaunts, the Alpena Island Trail and Alpena Island Park Loop are easy pet-friendly adventures close to home.

Make Some New Friends

Dogs love to visit Thomas Stafford Dog Park. Situated behind the post office on Fletcher Street, dogs can safely enjoy their freedom at this off-leash park. It’s open year-round for dogs and their owners to catch up and play together.

Apple Picking and Dino Fun!

It wouldn’t be a list of pet-friendly adventures in Alpena, MI without mentioning Knaebe’s Apple Farm. Get ready to spend one of the best days in the sunshine with your pet, and make it complete with a basket of the tastiest, crunchiest apples to take home (and don’t forget the doughnuts).

Another fantastic way to spend the day with your pet is to mini-golf and fossil-hunt at Dinosaur Gardens. Pets are welcome on-leash and can take part in all this destination has to offer.

Out and About

In addition to our local stores, such as Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Habitat ReStore, and Tractor Supply, pets are also welcome to accompany their owners to dine and/or hang out on the patios of the following restaurants:

If you have guests from out of town that also have pets, you can confidently refer them to any of these pet-friendly accomodations:
